Over a century ago a practice in China started to end. This practice involved the very tight binding of young girls feet to stop them growing. This was a painful and tortuous process, but was done as a smaller foot was considered more erotic and a higher price could then be demanded for a bride with smaller feet. Fortunately the practice stopped as it resulted in a painful and disabled foot.
At least the nature of the practice stopped. It is considered by many to still be going on in modern society with the practice of females wearing types of shoes that make them appear more attractive but over the long term results in damage to the foot.
