Pain in the heel of children is relatively common and in most cases is a condition commonly known as Severs disease or technically known as calcaneal apophysitis. This is a benign disorder of the growth plate at the back of the heel bone in which the growing area becomes strained. It is a benign problem as they grow out of it in the mid-teenage years when the growth plate merges with the rest of the heel bone. This is more common in active children. The pain of this condition usually is around the edges of the heel bone at the back, often painful to squeezing. Its is usually painful during activity, but can be painful after activity if it gets worse. The most common treatment for calcaneal apophysitis is to use a cushioned heel raise to protect the area and lesson the pull from the achilles tendon.
